The Best $10,000 I Ever Spent

I got a pretty good birthday present this year… a heifer from Skye High Heather Ange and HHH Gold Kanyon. And apparently Heather still hasn’t figured out how to make anything else, because this makes her fifth heifer for me.

I wanted Heather long before she was ever for sale. I first saw her in the weaning pen and started bugging Skyler about buying her, but he refused to sell her. A couple years later, after I had sold my first animal for a pretty good price at an auction, I reached back out and basically begged him to just put a dollar amount on her. He finally did.

That number was $10,000. Heather was heavy bred back as a heifer, and at the time that was by far the most money I had ever spent on a cow. I definitely second guessed whether I had completely lost my mind spending that much money on one Highland.

But I knew why I wanted her. Heather is out of two of my favorite Highlands, Gusgurlach of Windrush and Skye High Vermillion. Vermillion is also the dam of Skye High Cornerstone, who is still one of my favorite Highland sires.

Five heifers later, I’d say she has been worth every penny I spent on her. Highland prices have skyrocketed since then, and it’s funny to think about how nervous spending $10,000 on her made me at the time. If I could buy a dozen Heathers for that price today, I would.

Anyway, birthday girl needs a name. Preferably something starting with P… give me your best ideas.
