Finally Making Something That Feels Like Me

One of the best parts of working on HoofnHorn has been the branding. I’m finally getting to be artistic and develop a brand, and apparently choosing a style and sticking with it makes me feel grown up. I jumped around for years with Happy Hens & Highlands. I went through about 50 logo changes, and I still don’t feel like any of them represent me now. I’ve always struggled to settle on a certain look or even a color scheme.

When Jason sent me the logo for HoofnHorn, I loved it, but I wasn’t sure how to pull my photos together for marketing. My photography has always been more blues and greens and not as moody. But as I started playing around with the colors in my photos, the palette started coming together. Now I’m getting ideas for beautiful posters and finding new uses for photos I’ve had for years.

I have almost 80,000 photos of just cows on my phone that I’ve never had the heart to delete. Seeing them finally getting used makes me happy, especially because every animal in those photos has a story in my journey to this place. Like the main girl in the first photo, Big Rhonda. She was my first registered Highland, and she’s still with me today at 18. Of course I want her to be part of this.

I’m very picky now about how Highlands are photographed, and one thing that immediately throws me off when I look at a farm is a bad photo. I posted so many bad ones over the years before I really knew cattle, so I’ve been guilty of it too. I don’t have the best cattle, but I do have an eye for catching one in the right light. I’m still learning how to take good photos, and the more I learn, the pickier I get.

I love art, and I’ve always wanted to do design, but I never felt like I was original enough. This is the first time I’ve gotten to bring this much of myself into it, with my own photos and the stories behind them. I feel like I’m doing something unique, and getting to use my artistic talents on something I’m this excited about and see so much value in means a lot to me. Anyway, it’s been really nice to feel inspired by my cattle again.
