I Knew What Farmers Needed. I Didn’t Know How to Build It.

With CowMatch, I tried to build something bigger than I knew how to build. I understood the problems and had ideas about what would help, but I reached a point where I couldn’t move the platform forward. I didn’t have the technical skills or the budget to hire someone who did.

Then Jason came along, and he had the skills I was missing. I’ll explain something breeders need or a problem I’ve run into, and before I know it, he has something built. He also sees possibilities I wouldn’t have known to ask about. After years of having ideas I couldn’t do much with, it’s really cool to experience that.

I’m more comfortable with what I have to offer now, too. I don’t consider myself an expert breeder, but I have experience I can put to use. I’ve been the inexperienced buyer, struggled to sell cattle, and tried to grow before having the infrastructure. I’ve made decisions I wouldn’t make again, and those experiences affect what I want us to build.

I’m happy with my cattle and confident in why I’ve chosen them, but I won’t always have what someone needs. Sometimes another breeder has the animal or genetics that would suit them better. I’m good at making those connections, and I know breeders with really good cattle who struggle to get them in front of buyers. That’s something I can help with.

I helped found the Southeast Highland Cattle Show & Sale and still help run it. I’ve also marketed cattle for other people and bought and resold cattle myself. All of that takes time, and buying the animals adds the responsibility of keeping and moving them, too. I want to help buyers and sellers find each other without having to handle every step personally.

That’s what I want HoofnHorn to make easier. We’re building tools to help sellers present their animals clearly and reach buyers, with the goal of reducing the work and expense involved in selling. We earn a small fee when an animal sells, and the affiliate program gives people who send buyers and sellers our way a chance to earn something, too.

I want breeders to make their own decisions about their programs and buyers to decide what fits their farms and what they’re willing to pay. Our role is to give them better tools and information, including useful photos, pedigrees, and records, so they have more to go on. I believe the market should determine an animal’s value. A breeder shouldn’t have to be great at marketing to give their cattle a fair chance of being seen.

With CowMatch, I got something started but couldn’t take it as far as I wanted. Now I can bring Jason a problem I’ve spent years dealing with, and we can work on a practical way to address it. I care about these breeds and want the people raising them to do well. It feels good to finally have a way to put more of those ideas to work.
